Since 2009, we've been bringing independent filmmakers and audiences together through film festivals, screenings and special events across Australia and Europe. From intimate monthly film nights to multi-day international festivals, our passion for championing independent cinema has remained a constant part of the Nexus journey.

Love, Sex & Cinema Film Festival

Love, Sex & Cinema Film Festival is an international celebration of films that explore desire, connection, vulnerability, and the spaces where bodies and emotions meet. We created the festival to provide a space for films that explore intimacy as an essential part of human storytelling, rather than simply erotic spectacle, and to champion bold, thoughtful cinema that often falls between traditional festival categories.

Launched in Berlin in 2026, the inaugural edition ran from September 15–18 at IL KINO and b-ware! Ladenkino, with every screening selling out. The festival opened with the German premiere of the acclaimed Canadian documentary Modern Whore, followed by a special Q&A with director Nicole Bazuin and star Andrea Werhun. The inaugural edition exceeded all our expectations, marking an extraordinary start to a festival we feel deeply passionate about. We look forward to returning in 2027.

Shorts In Season Film Festival

After a long break from running film festivals, we returned to the festival scene in 2025 with Shorts In Season, designed to showcase the best short films from across Europe.

The inaugural edition took place on December 10, 2025, at b-ware! Ladenkino in Berlin, drawing a great turnout and enthusiastic audience response. The Wedding Photo by Edlin Jap took home Best Film, decided by audience vote.

Building on the success of its first year, Shorts In Season returned on July 7, 2026, with a sold-out screening at IL KINO and the introduction of a judging panel. Mango by Steven-Kristjan Tšoba won both Standout Film and Audience Favourite, while Jan Melkebeek received Standout Director for The Neapolitan Plot and Danny Lee was awarded Standout Actor for his performance in The Lover, directed by Cadenza Zhao.

Made In Melbourne Film Festival

Made In Melbourne Film Festival was founded in 2009 with a simple goal: to give Melbourne filmmakers a festival dedicated entirely to showcasing their work. What began as a single night of ten short films grew over eight consecutive years into a major celebration of Melbourne’s independent film community, expanding to include feature films, shorts, music videos, web series and a dedicated showcase for high school filmmakers.

Over its eight-year run, the festival screened hundreds of films at some of Melbourne’s most prestigious cinema and arts venues, including ACMI, the Astor Theatre, Capitol Theatre and BMW Edge. The festival received support from the City of Melbourne on two occasions and attracted coverage from publications including The Age, Herald Sun, Melbourne Weekly, Beat Magazine, ScreenHub and Cinema Australia, alongside numerous radio appearances. MIM also took Melbourne filmmaking beyond the annual festival through Best of MIM screenings in Berlin, the United States and regional Victoria, as well as screenings at White Night Melbourne, Docklands and QV Melbourne.

By its eighth and final edition in 2016, MIM had grown into a six-night festival across five venues, presenting more than 70 films over 13 sessions and attracting more than 1,000 attendees. Opening night saw around 300 people attend a screening of The Legend of Ben Hall followed by a filmmaker Q&A at ACMI. The final year also saw the festival launch its Indigenous Script to Screen Initiative, giving an Indigenous Victorian writer the opportunity to have their screenplay professionally produced and premiered at the festival. The selected project was Half, written by Wadawurrung writer Stephanie Skinner.

After eight years, Made In Melbourne went on hiatus in 2017 as we prepared to leave Australia and relocate to Malta. What started as a small passion project had grown far beyond what we originally imagined, bringing together thousands of audience members and filmmakers and providing a platform for hundreds of locally made films. Although MIM never returned, it remains an important part of Nexus Production Group’s history and laid the foundations for our eventual return to festival programming in Berlin.

Short Cut Monthly Film Nite

Short Cut Monthly Film Nite was a regular showcase of independent short films held in Melbourne from 2010 to 2012. Designed to bring filmmakers and film lovers together in a relaxed, social environment, the event featured curated screenings of submitted short films, filmmaker Q&As, audience voting for Best Film, and opportunities for networking.

Over its three-year run, Short Cut was hosted at three Melbourne venues: Station 59 in Richmond, Order of Melbourne on Swanston Street, and Red Bennies on Chapel Street. Running alongside Made In Melbourne Film Festival, Short Cut provided another platform for independent filmmakers to share their work, connect with audiences and celebrate short-form cinema.
